Advanced Dry Eye Testing

Dry Eye disease, also known as ocular surface disease, is a complex disease process. The Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) Dry Eye Workshop (DEWS) II defines dry eye disease as the following:

“Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and accompanied by ocular symptoms, in which tear film instability and hyperosmolarity, ocular surface inflammation and damage, and neurosensory abnormalities play etiological roles.”

Noticeable differences in the new definition of dry eye disease include the loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and neurosensory abnormalities which may contribute to dry eye disease.

The optometrists at Eyes on Camp Bowie utilize advanced technology to sample your tears to evaluate homeostasis and inflammatory markers in your tears to provide the best and most effective dry eye treatment options for you.

Lipiscan Meibomian Gland Imaging

Lipiscan is a device used by our Fort Worth optometrists in visualizing the meibomian glands or oil gland structures. Think of it like an ultrasound for the eyelid. This allows your eye doctor to grade the severity of meibomian gland dysfunction, and to personalize the best dry eye treatment option for each individual.

TearLab Osmolarity

Tear osmolarity is an important biomarker of ocular surface health and homeostasis or balance. An abnormal tear osmolarity indicates an unstable or unhealthy tear film. If not treated, the epithelial cells or outer layer of the cornea becomes damaged and the result can be blurred vision and/or fluctuating vision. Ask our Fort Worth Eye Doctors what your osmolarity score is!

Quidel Inflammadry

Inflammadry is a point-of-care test that allows our eye doctors to detect MMP-9 levels in the tears which are an indication of inflammation. If high levels of inflammation are detected, our Fort Worth eye doctors may recommend anti-inflammatory treatment options.
